The Richest Pets In The World
Gunther IV the dog: £224 million
Meet Gunther IV, the richest dog in the world according to the 2009 Pet Rich List from Petplan. The Alsatian might look like any other, but he is worth a whopping £224 million, a fortune he indirectly inherited from Countess Karlotta Libenstein. A property tycoon, Gunther is the proud owner of several residences, including Madonna’s mansion in Miami, and has his own butler.
Kalu the chimpanzee: £53 million
Second on Petplan’s list of prosperous pets is Kalu the chimpanzee, worth an estimated £53 million. He inherited Patricia O’Neill’s fortune after she separated from her husband, famous swimmer Frank O’Neill. While other chimps might be content in a tree, Kalu relaxes in a plush Cape Town estate.
Toby Rimes the dog: £30 million
Some animals only come by their wealth later on in life. Not Toby Rimes. He is the latest in a long line of privileged poodles dating back to 1931, when Ella Wendel left her pet poodle a £15 million fortune. That sum has since grown and Toby now boasts a £30 million bank balance.
Oprah Winfrey’s dogs: £30 million
Oprah Winfrey is rich and so are her dogs. According to Petplan, the lucky canines are set to inherit a hefty £30 million from their famous owner. That might seem excessive but, with Oprah earning around £156 million a year from her show, they might actually feel a little hard done by.
Gigoo the Hen: £10 million
Face it: humans give chickens a pretty hard time. When we’re not stealing their eggs, we’re deep frying them in a blend of herbs and spices.
So it’s nice to hear about publishing mogul Miles Blackwell, who in 2000 left his feathered friend Gigoo a £10 million present following the death of his wife Briony the year before.
Blackie the cat: £9 million
Given their air of superiority, cats around the world will no doubt be a little disappointed that the most minted moggy only comes seventh on the list. Blackie’s share of Ben Rea’s inheritance means he has a none-too-shabby £9 million in the bank, according to Petplan.
Trouble the dog: £7.2 million
Trouble the Maltese Terrier lived up to his name when in 2007 he inherited millions from his socialite owner, Leona Hemsley. Outrage that the inheritance had not gone to Hemsley’s relatives led to a judge cutting Trouble’s inheritance down by £5 million. Trouble continues to live in doggy luxury in New York.
Flossie the dog: £3.6 million
Actress Drew Barrymore was so grateful to her beloved Labrador Retriever for saving her life when her house was on fire that she has pledged her house to Flossie in her will. Not bad pay for a day’s work.
