How can an obvious scam generate so much comment? Well. I'm writing aren't I?
The technology talked about is nothing new, but the concept is even older -- Sign up for our site, or send us $1, or any 'do this' before I give you some gold-nugget of information is a get-rich-quick-scheme, and nothing more. THey just have to make it sound important, so you'll sign up. At best it is a penny-stock which someone will ride until it's worth $1M and them sell it. Rinse and repeat...
Unfortunately, to quote W.C.Fields, "there IS a sucker born every minute," actually probably every second...
Cloud computing is real, and gaining wider acceptance every day. It's not isolated to Japan, but is pretty widespread among bog companies. For the home user, think of the backup companies, or even yahoio and gmail -- they are all based on a 'farm' of servers and we use a light-weight client -- called a browser with Java. I've been in this business for 32 years, and I've seen that pendulum swing from centralized to local client may times in many ways, but it still ends up being about the value of information. Gaming is just one use of computers, and even there you have WoW, et al., which still have a central server. I'll shut up now-- rant over.

If this technology were to become reality I highly doubt MS hasn't already played with it or are currently doing so. But imagine if a huge amount of people begin storing their data in one huge central place then so will huge amounts of hackers be attacking one convenient area and if even one of them is successful then guess what? and you think just your computer being hacked was a problem? imagine millions all at once, millions of terabytes of data lost forever....the downfall, the chaos....I'm sure this will be MS' comment if this were ever to be readily available and Gates was'nt ready for it. In a way I'm kinda hopeing it does as I will be the first to jump all over the MS stock when it hits an all time low only to ride along when the "new idea" crashes and MS stock skyrockets.

This technology is far advanced but changing our current technology will take a lifetime! little by little, bit by bit, our technology will evolve! this is the process...sounds like an evolution theory...

Well, there's only one way to find out the truth... Ask the Japanese...

If you do think this is a pipe dream, then what do you think DRM Products are?

These products are exactly that. What is wrong with you people?

1 company, with 10 servers to serve a particular need is a CLUSTER...

Man you people are so short sighted...

This won't hurt Microsoft, or Bill Gates pocket book, but it will hurt us, the people...you stupid...stupid people.

Your post is still there Steve!

As long as there are big companies such as Microsoft, Apple or IBM etc - there will always be haters. Those that like to side with the alternative or underdog (such as Sony ps3 (alternative) or linux op) - and only those people will believe this nonsense. Why nonsense? Because this software does exist, I already use thin client tech and also citrix/terminal serivces/vdi software at work. But not at home - no 'metered service' - No thanks! I'm not getting into a never ending monthly fee that I pay nothing for just now! And maybe I like 'upgrading my PC'! And maybe it's private that I don't want 'metered' and I like running my processes locally and fast!

Yes- Possible if I was an old grandad that just wanted to browse the internet to pay some bills.

Plausable? Not for me - The Japanese can keep it. All 75% of them.

Internet over optical fibre. Once this is in place, cloud computing can become a reality. As for privacy, the data stored on the cloud could be encrypted and then decrypted at the terminal.

This is without a doubt the dumbest thing I have ever read. Think about it people. How could transmitting data over the internet to a cluster to be processed possibly be faster than using your own cpu. Come on. I'm sure such a system is possible but I'm also sure the speed, reliability and privacy would leave a lot to be desired. Face it, Microsoft is here to stay because most people that use a computer only know how to turn it on and wait for the pop-up from Bill telling them what to do. This gives M$ a near monopoly which results in most software being made for Windows which results in people buying Windows to run the software. Microsoft has cashed in on something that most are unwilling to admit - the ignorance of the masses.
